Swedish
An oil or lotion massage consisting of long relaxing strokes (Efleurage), combined with various forms of kneading (Petrissage), vibration, friction, and percussion (Tapoment). The intention is muscle relaxation, enhanced venous return, or blood circulation, release of toxins from the muscles. The strokes are always applied in the direction of blood flow to the heart. This can be extremely beneficial for anyone, specifically those with poor circulation and those who are bedridden. Swedish massage is valuable in recovery from injury and muscle strain in that it actively flushes lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic waste from the tissues, replenishing them with fresh clean oxygenated blood. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. Swedish massage is recommended by medical doctors as a vital part of a physical health program and as a stress reducer.
This type of massage is performed on a massage table where the client is unclothed and under a sheet. The therapist uses professional draping standards and only uncovers one body part at a time. The client is always made to feel safe and comfortable.
